The City of Rochester, Minnesota (pop. 115,000+) Park and Recreation Department provides a variety of leisure time opportunities for people to enjoy and manages more than 3500 acres of park land including 2 outdoor pools, 4 golf courses, over 100 individual parks and 85 miles of paved trails.

Nature of Work
This is a temporary/seasonal/limited appointment position that assists with the day-to-day care and maintenance of various City properties including park grounds, sports playing fields, golf courses, public plazas, street scapes, trees, urban & naturalized landscapes, roadway medians,  and roadway right-of-ways. Duties include mowing, trimming, weeding and raking. This position must be able to interact with the public in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner.

Work Schedule:
Positions are available in the Parks, Forestry and Golf Divisions from late March through October. Work schedules vary and include weekends and early morning/evening hours.

Pay Rate: $15.00 to $17.50 per hour, depending on qualifications/experience.
 
*Pursuant to MN Statute, seasonal assignments are limited to 67 working days per calendar year or 100 working days per calendar year if the employees are under the age of 22, are full-time students enrolled in a nonprofit or public educational institution prior to being hired by the employer, and have indicated, either in an application for employment or by being enrolled at an educational institution for the next academic year or term, an intention to continue as students during or after their temporary employment. However, some positions may be scheduled to work up to 1000 hours per season.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The work below is representative of the scope of work performed within this job classification. Individual job duties will vary based on work assignment.

  • Perform grounds maintenance duties including clearing debris, mowing, trimming, weeding, raking, and watering.
     
  • Perform landscape creation duties including grading, site preparation, seeding, sodding, and planting.
     
  • Empty trash containers, clean restrooms and remove animal waste.
     
  • Maintain and clean all equipment used on a daily basis.
     
  • Assist with cleaning, repairing and/or maintaining departmental facilities.
     
  • Assist with the set-up/clean-up of seasonal activities and events.
     
  • Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.
     

 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

At least 18 years of age to work in Parks and Forestry
At least 16 years of age to work in the Golf Division

Valid driver's license

Desirable Qualifications
High School diploma or the equivalent (GED) 
Experience performing grounds or landscape maintenance
Experience operating and/or maintaining equipment similar to that used in grounds or landscape maintenance


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: the principles and practices of general grounds and landscape maintenance as well as a basic identification and comprehension of common grasses, trees and shrubs; operating characteristics, maintenance requirements and safety procedures and precautions associated with operating and maintaining assigned equipment; the recreational activities being played at various City facilities and the appropriate sports etiquette.

Skill in: operating and maintaining landscape maintenance equipment.

Ability to: follow oral and written instructions; make minor operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment; perform manual tasks under varied weather conditions; establish and maintain effective working relationships; positively interact with public and coworkers; and provide positive customer service.

In consideration of the overall amount of physical effort required to perform this position, the work is best described as Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
