The Rochester Public Library (MN) seeks a part-time custodian who is highly motivated, energetic, organized and hardworking with excellent customer service skills to work in the library's Maintenance Division.

The Maintenance Division is responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of the library building and its fixtures, furnishings and systems.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to set priorities and be flexible in spite of routine interruptions. The successful candidate can work independently, steadily, and efficiently for an extended period of time. The ability to work with the public, to work with minimal supervision and a commitment to uphold our customer service standards are essential.

Schedule:
Weekday Hours Available: Monday-Thursday, 3:30pm-8:30pm and Friday, 3:30pm-6:30pm
One weekend shift per month is required

Nature of Work
This is a part time position that performs custodial and general maintenance duties within and around the library building. Work involves routine cleaning and maintenance duties to ensure the library premises is clean, disinfected, orderly, properly maintained and safe. Most work is performed independently, under the direction of the Building Maintenance Worker III or the Building Maintenance Worker and supervision of the Administrative Services Coordinator. Some decision making and judgment is required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

*Vacuum, sweep, mop and shampoo carpet and floors. Dust and clean furniture, shelves, and equipment. Clean and disinfect all surfaces in the public and staff areas. 

*Clean and disinfect restrooms and replenish supplies. Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, kitchen, appliances, workroom sinks, countertop and other items and areas.

*Wash windows, doors, walls and glass. Collect recyclables tubs. Collect book donations from exterior donation bins. Remove trash from wastebaskets and clean wastebaskets if needed.

*Clear sidewalks and steps of debris and snow

*Perform minor maintenance, routine repairs and minor plumbing

*Assist library staff and the public using photocopiers and reader/printers or other equipment

*Open the building in the morning and close and secure the building at the end of the day

*Meet the City's Customer Service Standards in all interactions with the public and staff

Perform other tasks as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent

Desirable Qualifications
Experience in custodial or building maintenance work
Basic experience with the monitoring of building maintenance and control systems

Special Requirement
Background/criminal history check required as a condition of employment

Knowledge of: custodial and building maintenance practices, supplies, and equipment.

Skill in: use of custodial and building maintenance tools, materials, supplies and equipment.

Ability to: perform physical work associated with general custodial and maintenance duties; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; perform responsible work independently; complete routine and repetitive tasks; interruptions to work; and interact with library staff and library users positively and pleasantly.

In consideration of the overall amount of physical effort required to perform this position, the work is best described as Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Physical demands that may be required continuously (2/3 or more of the time), frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time) are noted below:

Continuous demands: walking and standing.
Frequent demands: pushing/pulling; lifting; carrying; reaching; bending; twisting; and handling.

Sensory requirements necessary in the performance of the essential functions of this position include: sight, hearing, and touch.

Environmental conditions that may exist in the performance of the essential functions of this job include:
