A Day in the Life at Custom Alarm
 
Reports to: Fire Alarm Project Manager
Hours: Full-Time/M-F/7:00am-4:00pm (roughly)
Location: Southeast Minnesota
Company Size: 70 employees
Pay Range: $18.00 - $25.00 (starting wage is based on a number of considerations including; education, certifications, related experience, etc.)
 
 
The Main Responsibilities
Fire Alarm Inspectors report to the Fire Alarm Project Manager and are responsible for inspecting and testing fire alarm systems to ensure proper operation and code compliance. They maintain accurate inspection reports, track deficiencies, perform minor repairs or equipment replacements, and interact professionally with customers and coworkers in support of Custom Alarm’s Vision, Purpose, and Core Values.
 

  • Inspect and test customer fire alarm systems following set procedures; perform minor repairs or replacements as needed.
  • Complete and submit accurate inspection reports and documentation using required software.
  • Communicate system issues to customers and internal teams to ensure timely corrections.
  • Recommend system upgrades or additions to keep customers informed of new technology.
  • Maintain assigned tools, inventory, and company vehicle (if provided).
  • Follow all safety policies and suggest improvements when needed.
  • Attend training, maintain certifications/licenses, and track required recertification and CEUs.
  • Assist with other alarm operations, including occasional service or installation.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of fire alarm systems, equipment, and codes.
  • Use computer software to connect to panels, perform basic programming, and generate reports.
 
REQUIREMENTS:
What We Look For in a Candidate
Required Education, Experience, and Certifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of two years relatable experience
  • Power Limited Technician License (PLT)
  • NICET Level I
 
Beneficial Education and Certifications
  • Electronics Degree or equivalent low-voltage experience
  • NICET Level II and III
 
Additional Skills and Abilities
  • Positive attitude with a willingness to learn and grow
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use tools and equipment
  • Good written, verbal, and listening communication skills
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, and job-specific software)
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to complete tasks on schedule
 
Physical Demands
This role requires standing and walking throughout the day, with occasional sitting while traveling. Duties include climbing ladders and stairs (up to 50 ft), lifting up to 100 lbs, and frequent bending, kneeling, and reaching. Strong vision, hearing, communication skills, and color recognition for wiring are essential. Daily driving and operation of equipment such as lifts, drills, and power tools are required.
Working Conditions
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions, including dust, noise, and Minnesota weather.
  • Flexible schedule may include early mornings, evenings, or weekends to meet customer needs.
  • Some out-of-town travel required, including occasional overnight stays.
 
Other Requirements
  • Reliable attendance
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and insurability
  • Employment contingent on background check and drug test due to security requirements
  • A training period will be required working with the fire systems installation team is typically required unless prior experience is satisfactory.
