Program Assistant

Part-time (non-exempt, hourly), 20 hours per week starting at $16/hour

Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and some Sundays when scheduled in advance 

Reports to the Program Director

Overview

The Program Assistant works closely with the Program Director and Education & Program Specialist to ensure successful programming and enriching educational experiences at Rochester Art Center. 

Program Responsibilities

Work closely with the Program Director and Education & Program Specialist to ensure programs are staffed and run smoothly. 

Cover Creative Studio shifts as needed. Be available to assist volunteers and interns when they work in Creative Studio.

Help facilitate, set-up and strike programs such as Total Arts Day Camp, public and private workshops, classes, artist talks and virtual programs which are primarily coordinated by the Program Director. Assist with coordination to actualize programs. 

Foster a welcoming environment and a sense of belonging for all Art Center visitors, staff and volunteers. 

Share a creative role with the Education & Program Specialist in organizing, supplying and tidying the classroom studios. 

Assist in the development, implementation and promotion of programs for schools and other facilities with limited access to Rochester Art Center building. 

Represent the Art Center in a positive and professional manner throughout the Civic Center campus and in the community. 

Manage email efficiently. Respond to all communications soliciting a response within 48 hours.

Maintain self-awareness to effectively recognize strengths and weaknesses as a team-member.

Secure building to ensure proper building security at all times. Lock, secure and arm security system when last to leave.

Follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.

Assist other departments and events on and off site to support overall mission.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or similar experience

  • Experience in museum setting, art services or related work preferred

  • Basic understanding of audio/video equipment, with the ability to learn new skills in regards to operating and maintaining specialized A/V systems

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, able to analyze situations, responding quickly to deliver effective solutions

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and artists, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing in a timely manner

  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs in order to move or organize art supplies and set-up/strike studio classrooms as needed

  • Ability to maintain accurate records, write reports, business correspondence, and procedural guides; effectively present information and respond to questions from colleagues and the general public

Physical and Environmental Requirements of the Position

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, sit, move about, hear and speak. Noise level may be high when the museum is installing or deinstalling artwork. Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift.

Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone. Ability to use computer equipment to complete reports, correspondence, maintain inventories, etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities of Rochester Art Center employees, but will often supervise volunteers and interns.
