A Day in the Life at Custom Alarm
The CAD Drafter prepares detailed 2D CAD drawings for fire alarm, security, and CCTV systems installed and serviced by Custom Alarm. These drawings are essential in providing submittals for permitting and installation and are supported from the design phase through project closeout. Applicants must lead by example and support the Vision, Purpose, and Core Values of the company.
Reports to: Vice-President of Sales and Design
Hours: Full-Time/M-F/7:30am-4:30pm
Location: Southeast Minnesota
Company Size: 70 employees
Pay Range: $24.00 - $30.00 (starting wage is based on a number of considerations including; education, certifications, related experience, etc.)
The Main Responsibilities
- Prepare 2D CAD drawings of floor plans, equipment layout, and riser diagrams as assigned. CAD drawings to be completed prior to salesperson submitting paperwork for job completion.
- Ensure drawings meet all necessary codes, AHJ requirements, and company standards.
- Maintain organized drawing files, templates, and libraries.
- Contact general contractors, architects & engineers, electrical contractors, or maintenance personnel to obtain blueprints or CAD files as needed.
- Create as-built drawings and update plans to reflect field changes and project revisions
- Print any necessary CAD drawings as requested.
- Maintain CAD software in a standardized format for all job drawings, bid drawings, bid specifications, and as built drawings with CAD team.
- Maintain plotter with CAD team.
- Attend training to continually refresh and update knowledge of fire alarm industry.
- Help apply for necessary fire alarm permits.
REQUIREMENTS:
What We Look For in a Candidate
Education
· High School Diploma or equivalent
· CAD Degree/Certificate or equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Additional Skills and Abilities
· Proficient in AutoCAD 2026
· Knowledge of Bluebeam preferred
· Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office
· Ability to read and understand blueprints and specifications
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
· Knowledge of security and fire alarm systems and schematics is beneficial but not required

This is a largely sedentary role; however, movements such as stooping, kneeling, crawling, and climbing may sometimes be necessary. Simultaneous and repetitive movements of hands, wrists, and fingers are required. Audio, visual, and verbal functions are vital aspects of performing this job. Excellent color vision is necessary for the purpose of color-coding.
Working Conditions
This job operates in a professional office environment. Some exposure to the outdoors may be necessary when visiting job sites. There may be some exposure to dust, insulation, noise, and heat or cold. After hours work and out-of-town trips may sometimes be necessary.
Other Requirements
Regular and reliable attendance is required. The ability to work independently and as a team is important. Due to the security nature of our business, an offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and drug test.
