Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, hydrology, environmental science, or related field.

Or

Associate’s degree from an accredited college in chemistry, biology, hydrology, environmental science, or related field and two (2) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Lead risk assessor currently credentialed by the MN Department of Health.
  • Healthy Homes Specialist credentialed by the Building Performance Institute.

Nature of Work

Under general supervision assists with environmental public health projects and community outreach. Analyzes and evaluates environmental public health data and trends and maintains healthy homes website information and dashboards. Provides consult and technical assistance to the public and partner organizations on environmental public health topics including water quality and healthy homes. Assists with activities to meet deliverables of the healthy homes and water quality related grants. Attends and facilitates regional water quality or healthy homes meetings and outreach events. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.

Examples of Work

  • Collects, compiles, and evaluates water quality and healthy homes data, surveys, and educational tools and human health hazard mitigation resources.
  • Provides consultation to the public and regional partners regarding environmental public health services. Recommends improvements to environmental public health and implementation of interventions to address environmental threats to human health.  
  • Assists with the development and implementation of regional drinking water quality and healthy homes initiatives.
  • Conducts community outreach, creates workplans, and develops goals and objectives. Assists with preparation and coordination of environmental public health projects, including presentations to the public and key stakeholders.
  • Performs chemical and bacteriological laboratory analysis of water samples.
  • Assists with maintaining state certifications.
  • Supports the department during emergency situations.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices as related to the recognition, elimination, and control of environmental public health hazards.
  • Knowledge of public health and natural sciences.
  • Knowledge of environmental public health, epidemiology, microbiology, biostatistics, and risk communication.
  • Skill in the use of computers and technology including Esri suite of GIS software and Microsoft excel.
  • Skill in the operation of lab analytical equipment, including computer interfaces,
  • Skill in conducting analysis of water samples in the field or lab.
  • Skill in analyzing problems and developing efficient and effective solutions.
  • Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written, including public speaking and presenting.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and demonstrate time management.
  • Ability to develop and follow complex verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to interpret maps and quality assurance manuals.
  • Ability to identify and address environmental conditions that effect integrity or quality of sample analysis.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to identify and recommend quality improvements.
