Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience

Expected starting salary is $30.99 to $41.38.  Full salary is $30.99 to $51.76.

A combination of education and experience equivalent to four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of instruments and control systems or a similar position as listed in the work functions.

OR

Associate's degree from an accredited college in electrical repair and maintenance and two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of instruments and control systems or a similar position as listed in the work functions.

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver's license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.
 
Required Special Qualifications:
  • Must be registered with the State of Minnesota as an Unlicensed Electrician within six (6) months of hire. A Maintenance Electrician License may be substituted for the Registered Unlicensed Electrician requirement.

  • Minnesota Provisional Waste Combustor Certification within six (6) months of employment, per MN Statute 7011.1280 Subpart 3.B: 

Desirable Qualifications:
Possession of a valid Minnesota Electrician's license.
Background in resource recovery.
Possession of a valid Minnesota Class A Stationary Engineer's License.

Nature of Work

Under supervision, assists with the performance of corrective and preventative maintenance, repair, and calibration of all Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems and power plant instruments and controls. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.

Examples of Work

  • Performs maintenance, repair, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards for the facility’s Continuous Emission Monitoring systems.
  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks associated with instruments, including calibration, and control systems on heavy stationary boilers, electrical generation and transmission equipment, and related auxiliary support systems.
  • Maintains and repairs the facility’s instrument and control systems.
  • Performs all electrical and instrument control work in the facility.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports. Maintains the Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Collaborates with others in the installation and modification of plant instrument and control equipment.
  • Fabricates custom control subsystems for plant equipment and auxiliary systems.
  • Performs miscellaneous housekeeping in and around the work area.
  • Reports accidents.
  • Assists in maintaining spare parts and materials inventory.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the generation of steam and electric power.
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools and standards involved in performing maintenance on Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws governing pollution monitoring and control compliance.
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools and functioning involved in performing preventive maintenance on industrial equipment.
  • Knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely in and around mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the standards, materials, and methods of the mechanical and electrical trades.
  • Knowledge of the NFPA 70 National Electrical Code and NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and piping codes.
  • Skill in the use of Instrument and Control tools and equipment from simple hand tools to complex diagnostic equipment.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining electrical power generation and transmission equipment, district energy systems, chillers, absorbers, air pollution control equipment and water supply systems.
  • Skill in the use of computers and technology including computer-based preventive maintenance management systems.
  • Ability to recognize and diagnose the faulty operation of various power plant equipment and instrument and control systems.
  • Ability to follow and understand written and verbal instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate programs and organizational performance to assess efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical plans, sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
