Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience

Legal Assistant expected starting salary is $24.40 to $32.59. Full salary range is $24.40 to $40.77.

Paralegal expected starting salary is $27.14 to $36.25. Full salary range is $27.14 to $45.35.
 

Legal Assistant:

Associate’s degree from an accredited college in legal studies, paralegal studies, criminal justice, or closely related field.
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.

Paralegal:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in legal studies, paralegal studies, criminal justice, or related field.
OR
Associate’s degree from an accredited college in legal studies, paralegal studies, criminal justice, or related field and two (2) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to four (4) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver's license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Nature of Work

Under supervision, is responsible for managing, coordinating, monitoring and providing trial assistance for juvenile and criminal cases within the County Attorney's office.  Establishes communication with victims and witnesses, advises victims of their statutory rights and assists with case management. Attends court hearings with victims and witnesses. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.

Examples of Work

  • Per statute, locates and establishes initial personal line of communication with victims regarding availability, case consultation and litigation preparation, advises victims of statutory rights and their right to compensation through the Minnesota Crime Victims Reparations Board, and assists in obtaining application forms
  • Provides victims with information to apply for restitution and to obtain return of property
  • Assists attorneys with trial prep and coordination in the courtroom during contested hearings and trials.  
  • Develops reports and maintains documentation of witness information, including making supplemental reports of pre-trial interviews, file notes and contact information. 
  • Assists victims and witnesses in securing time off from employment and, where required, travel, lodging and childcare, and escorts victims to court and provides information and emotional support throughout the court process. Advises victims of availability of support services and encourages and assists victims in contacting and commencing the utilization of those services.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability, preferably established through prior experience, to work with crime victims in a sensitive, sympathetic, and productive fashion. 
  • Knowledge of general legal, administrative, and procedural matters involving the Office of the County Attorney.
  • Skill in the use of computers and technology
  • Knowledge of criminal procedure and its application to crimes and crime victims from initial prosecution through final dispositions
  • Ability to make decisions and work under deadlines in accordance with the functions of the office
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and agencies
  • Ability to relate to the public in a productive manner
